Here we share some of the latest stats that we have gathered over the last month and collated on our Google Internet Stats site:

Online usage

  • World Cup opening day fever pushed the internet to a new record. Traffic to news sites on June 11th reached over 12 million visitors per minute globally. The day's traffic exceeded the previous record of 8.5 million visitors per minute, which was set when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election in 2008.

  • Three years ago, only 9% of all UK internet time was spent on social networks & blogs (this equates to 1 minute in every 11). Since 2007, this sector has grown and now accounts for nearly 23% of UK internet time – the equivalent of 1 in every 4.5 minutes.

  • UK internet users now spend 64% more time using search engines (31 million hours per month in April 2010) than they did 3 years ago.

Mobile
  • An increasing number of iPhone users are not only making use of web search on their phones, nearly 1 in 4 watch videos and more than 1 in 5 take care of their personal banking while they are on the move.

  • As the number of mobile internet users looks set to surpass desktop internet users within the next 5 years, mobile advertising is expected to grow to £355m in Britain by 2014.

eCommerce
  • Nearly two thirds (64%) of the UK population have researched products/services online within the last 3 months.

  • An equivalent of £73 for every consumer in the UK is spent online.

  • Online retail sales have increased 22% year on year. This is the highest rate of increase in more than two years.
